Leave No Trace

Due to cuts in the City of Cincinnati’s 2011 operating budget, the Park Board announced changes to the garbage collection procedures within the Parks and the institution of a "Leave No Trace" policy in designated parks. Upon study, Park managers found that trash cans in remote, low intensity areas are ineffective for the collection of trash, costly in their operation and environmentally detrimental.  Therefore, effective in March of 2011, the Park Board began removing cans from these areas and reducing the number of trash collection routes in Parks from 2 routes to 1 route.  This enabled the Park Board to sustain a budget cut of $47,000 and still meet its service delivery principals: to keep Cincinnati Parks clean, safe, reliable, green and beautiful.

Park staff will still collect and remove trash from these sites during routine park maintenance, which is at least twice per week.  Additional changes will also be instituted to help reduce costs associated with garbage collection in the parks, while keeping the parks beautiful. It is expected that these new practices, with some adjustment and monitoring, will ultimately save tax dollars and provide better service.

"Leave No Trace" is a national program designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts with decisions about how to reduce their impact when they hike, picnic and enjoy other outdoor activities.  The program strives to educate all those who enjoy the outdoors about the nature of their impact and the techniques to prevent or minimize such impact.  It is best understood as an educational and ethical program rather than a set of new regulations and rules.  A very big impact of the outdoor enjoyment on Nature is the trash created by people that enjoy Nature.  One major impact is the disposal of trash.  "Pack it in, Pack it out" is the tag line of Leave No Trace trash education.  It proposes that all trash carried in by visitors also be carried out when they leave the site, rather than discarded, to minimize the "trace left behind."
